How many series were there of Beast Wars? I've seen Beast Machines Season1 for £7 in Matalan. Is it worth getting or will I need to get loads of other boxsets to understand whats going on?

Three seasons of BW, with 26, 13 and 13 episodes respectively.
Two seasons of BM, with 13 episodes each.
As for BM, you can watch it without watching BW, although you'll miss a little backstory and a lot of characterization. Unfortunately, there are no proper DVD releases of BW in Europe. If you have a region free player, go for the R1 sets (through Amazon.co.uk - you'll save a lot on shipping!) or the R4 Madman sets.
