So I've got this PC which needs fixing. Boots up to the windows loading screen (http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d66/MVPzach/12XP.gif), but then reboots after a fraction of a second.
I've tried reinstalling Windows from CD, but it can't see the (SATA) HD at all. Although the HD is detected during the POST.
I've defaulted the bios to make sure the previous owner didn't f**k anything up in there, didn't help. Also tried a 3.5" boot disk, but it won't load it.
Any suggestions? I'm thinking the HD could be fubar, but I don't want to replace it without being sure first.

Or if you don't have a pc but have a laptop around, you could put it in an external caddy, and see if it is detected as an external storage device. However, since it is getting that far, there's a good chance it might not be a HDD problem, could just be a registry problem. Will it boot to safe mode?

if it posts then gets to the XP screen it's not the hard drive, and it might not let you get into safe mode.
try the XP restore disk or any XP disk to see if it allows you to do a repair on the OS if not then it might be a case of (as said) usb it to another machine, take off anything you want/need and format it that way to see if windows lets you

Tried XP disc, doesn't get anywhere (Windows can't detect HD, press F3 to exit). There's nothing of mine on there, so tomorrow I'm going to download one of those formatting programs that boot off a 3.5" disk, wipe it and start again. I'd pretty much come to that conclusion this morning, but it's good to have a second opinion on the matter.

Aye, I've never encountered it before. It's got me stumped. I haven't bothered trying the disk wipe yet, but I will.. soon.
