I will be traveling from Suffolk. Generally I don't meet a single soul at AA from my area (apart from that random encounter with the weird woman from my comic shop). I'll be on either the train to Peterborough, then up to Birmingham, or going via London.
How about everyone let us know of their arrival times in Birmingham and can then can share a taxi out to the Suite?
I've gone both the taxi and bus route before, and let me tell you, the cost of the taxi is well worth it to avoid the buses. Especially when the bus drivers decides to take the long route, then stop for a fag half way through the journey. Was a nightmare even finding the right bus stand in the first place.

I'm getting there an hour early so was going to walk from New Street to the Claredon... is this not advised?

Birmingham is a difficult city to navigate, you have to think in three dimensions. It's like one of those Star Trek chess sets.
I mean, there's three different exits from New St that you may take, all of which would lead to a different route to the Clarendon Suites being most appropriate. There's the front entrance, the wise man's side entrance and the depressing Pallisades entrance.
Given such difficulties, Deadcal's suggestion makes sense - although cab fares are going through the roof lately.

Hmm, seems I can either arrive early or late, doh. I'll be at New Street by 10am if anyone wants to arrange a taxi with us.
Mind you, we might just mess about in the station for half an hour, no point arriving before the doors open.

Think I'm getting to the station for 9! So can hang on for people and get a group taxi, or take a chance with the walk I assume there's ample coffee shops/meeting places and so on in the station?

New St is pretty crap for meeting places, to be fair, because it's attached to a shopping centre that's well stocked for coffee shops.
There's a Burger King, some food shops and a pub (which is inside the ticket barrier, meaning you can't drink in there without wanting to catch a train).

Damnation. Do you chaps usually meet up anywhere before heading to the venue? I don't mind the walk if not.

Google earth reckons it's only half a mile. Then again, google earth can see into the past... my 5 year old flat still doesn't exist... and as such I cannot vouch for it's accuracy.

What's a good time to arrive? Because I've been very disorgaised of late I didn't get cheap train tickets sorted. The upside is that I have an open ticket. Trains from Southampton generally get in at about quarter to the hour so what's the ideal time?

New St is about 40 minutes walk from AA. Maybe a touch less.

I'll be driving, but seeing as the missus says we've gotta go to jess' bloody dance class first, we're probably not going to arrive til about 1.30ish. In other words, i won't be able to see prez sober.

For anyone going by train (especially from the South), Five Ways station is closer than New Street - You just head for the Five Ways roundabout then turn left up Hagley Road (right-hand side of it) until you get to the Clarendon. Should only take 20 minutes or so.

my mate is picking me up from new street at about 10 o'clock. it's obviously not my place to go about offering people lifts in someone elses car but wft. if i see anyone looking like they belong at a tf convention at that time at the front of new street, i'm sure we can fit you in the back seat/boot.

And just to add to this, you can get a train from New St - Five Ways every 10 minutes, and it takes about 5 mins to get to the station. It's a definite timesaver.
I will be at Five Ways station at some point. Isn't that exciting?
