According to this BBFC entry it seems that the UK won't be geting the first series of Animated in one set like the USA but instead will be getting a series of single discs, each with about 4 episodes on each. Credit to TFormers for the news. Personally I don't like this approach - if they were to make a box set I'd probably buy it, but not individual volumes. However, if the DVDs don't sell, Paramount will loose a lot less money on a single disk then they would on a box set, so from a certain perspective I understand their logic.

Whose f**ked up brain-dead idea was that? I would have bought it if we were getting the set, but now I'll be keeping my downloads to spite the bastards.

we never got sets of the unicron trilogy either, which is just stupid. at 52 episodes per series, there is no way people will buy 13 dvds of 4 episodes. Animated isnt quite as bad, with 26, but its still a bad idea.

Make that 29. It's 16 + 13 episodes.
And that's still 7 DVDs, plus all of season 3 that still has to be broadcast.

that is exactly what i thought
suprised this hasn't made it to the front page actually as it's pretty important news.
I pointblank refuse to buy in installments, that is exactly why i do not have avatar, beast wars, Megas Xlr and Harvey Birdman on DVD.
They should release these things properly or just not bother.

Oh absolutely. It rips off so many other cartoon/toku series in the process too.

think you've answered your own question, there Casperuk! there are people who will buy it - mainly parents for kids, at a guess. oddly, the US release of S1 isn't complete - that is also split across a 'movie' disc bolting the first three eps together and the rest of the season is available as a box set.
Quite apart with whats going on with that release, I wonder if the poor releases of recent TF cartoons are anything to do with a combination of slow sales and the target demographic having no interest in complete series boxsets?
Certainly in the UK there isn't much recognition of a more adult fanbase for TFs - or any other toy franchise, for that matter. As the toys are primarily marketed to children, any associated tie-in media will also be marketed this way. A parent is probably more likely to pick up a kids DVD of a cartoon show for under £10 than a complete series set for over £20.
What that obviously doesn't account for is these 'Best Of' DVDs that have started cropping up. Whilst these may be seen as a deliberate attempt to encourage fans to shell out more money for things they already own, I think its more a case of making a decent clutch of episodes available for those fans with a more limited budget.
Certainly in the case of Armada, having a 'Best Of' will no doubt vastly improve a slow, ponderous, badly dubbed show!
Hope you don't think I'm having a go, I just think you touched on some interesting points!

I just hope they don't do this to New Zealand. It's hard enough to find some of these DVDs already. We have to buy Bast Machines and Beast Wars as seperate volumes (I have only seen BW on www.moviestars.co.nz which has them all) and I have once seen the complete G1 collection (much cheaper than usual too). I've seen the 3 Takara Collection seris (two in store, all 3 [Victory was the one I didn't see in stores] at Movie Stars). Also, I can only find Energon Volume 1 and 2 - no box sets and I find too many of those G1 boxsets (the ones where there's some 6 boxsets or something stupid). Cybertron - only can find Volume 1 and sometimes I'm lucky to find Volume 1 of Armada. Never seen RID and the only Animated I've seen so far is the Battle Begins two-pack DVD (which is only good for seeing Sari's transforming motorbike thing/jetpack andthe extended/different intro/outro).

Just thought I would revive this thread and say that Paramount are taking the piss with international fans, releasing Season 1 and 2 in North America but giving us VOLUMES!
This is now confirmed if you look at Titan's Animated comic page, the box art is shown to be very similar to Australia's (and New Zealand's) with "Volume 1" written at the top, instead of Season One, and "Blast From The Past" at the bottom.
What's even more weird, Amazon.co.uk and HMV.com both give the following Synopsis:
Quote:
| This boxed collection features the full first
season of the original 1984 TRANSFORMERS animated series. Each
digitally remastered episode is shown in chronological order. 'More
Than Meets The Eye Parts 1-3', 'Transport To Oblivion', 'Roll For It',
'Divide and Conquer', 'Fire In the Sky', 'S.O.S. Dinobots', 'Fire On
the Mountain', 'War of the Dinobots', 'The Ultimate Doom Parts 1-3',
'Countdown To Extinction', 'A Plague Of Insections', and 'Heavy Metal
War' are the episodes included. |
|
|
Paramount Home Entertainment have also told every retailer that it will be Transformers: Animated Series - Season 1, so technically it is FALSE ADVERTISING or deception!

So paramount are either doing the logical thing and treating this as a purely kids-only release to logically shift as many copies to the target audience as possible, or they are utterly ignorant of the older fanbase and couldn't give two tugs of a dead dogs cock.
Perhaps we should ask them..?
I've just gone to Paramounts UK website and used the contact us facility. Hopefully I will get a response!

The same thing happened with the original G1 series here. The first season was released across three separately-released discs, with the many varied boxsets following after most of us (myself included) had already bought them. Naturally Hasbro will release multiple versions of the Animated series as well, to get the public to spend as much money as possible. First up are the individual bare-bones discs. Next up will undoubtedly be a boxset that contains each season in its entirety, but bereft of any extras. After that we'll get a revamped boxset with an assortment of extra features supplementing the actual episodes. And then....

they did the same thing with yugioh released at least the first part of there series despite running over several seasons and story lines (duelsist kingdom, battle city, waking the dragon and pharohs memory and the mini stories in between) was still only one series, two hundred and something episodes on disk.
I know they released the duelist kingdom on dvd 4 episodes a disk about 55 episodes in duelist kingdom
utter madness

UK distributors and/or studios are clearly ignorant of an older fanbase for any children's TV show. Maybe even ignorant of the target audience. A shame, cos as long as they keep ignoring that, they'll be losing sales whilst people like myself import R1 complete sets.
By comparrison, there has been a general improvement in the availability of complete series/season boxsets in other genres such as drama and sci-fi. Even some truly odd stuff has found its way onto DVD - Dempsey & Makepiece ,anyone? (personally, i'm still holding out for Manimal!)
Maybe its just part of the still prevailing attitude ,certainly in the UK, that childhood ends the minute you hit 11-12. A quick look at any UK comic stand seems to confirm this as they are seemingly aimed at a much younger audience. Highlighting that such things as Transformers, Spiderman, Star Wars and so on are the sole province of children.

There is a lack of respect in the UK for the collectors market. The Movie has proven that there is a general audience for Transformers ($50m box office in UK), as has the G1 boxsets (Season 1 from Metrodome sold over 700,000 copies) and Auto Assembly 08 with over 400 in attendance.
We do get some things better. Look at Disney's/Saban's catalogue. RID is out here, all of Marvel's 90s animated series (X-men, Spider-Man etc) are all coming out here etc.
Anyway, back to the DVD issue, I've already preordered the volume for £6. I'm mainly waiting for the fan edition of Animated, with WIDESCREEN episodes packed with extras, and hopefully in HD.

Well, I've had a very unhelpful email back from Paramount that simply redirects me to their ordering service online. Rubbish! They do however, state that I can put my query in writing. So I will!
Although I've noticed that they haven't actually given me an address to write to...
