Got to ask this, was Rodimus Crap as leader? Aside the facts, he stood in Primes Shadow and he was never given a chance. A great leader can overcome the challenges given to him or left to him, that makes him the leader and a strong leader at that, does it not?

He showed promise in the movie, was a whining bitch in the US series but improved a lot in the Headmasters Japan series.
Except for the one scene where just because he failed to prevent the destruction of Cybertron, he has to bail on the grounds that "I'm getting too old for this s**t!" takes his ball and his two bosom buddies and clears off!
(And to think, [Arcee] the one Fembot in the villiage, and he chooses Kup and Blurr over her! The fool!)

Yeah, I did not like the random exit during Headmasters. And did we ever find out if they found somewhere new to live? or are they just dead metal floating in space after they burned up their energon reserves (why didn't they use a spacecraft to go off exploring?!).
...hmm must have survived thinking about it, as Star Convoy came with a Micromaster Rodimus!
What I did not like about the US series, was that having made Rodimus come to terms with the burden of leadership ('the Burden Hardest To Bear') , they then write him handing the Matrix over to Optimus! Rubbish.
What did it for Rodimus is someone somewhere realising they'd made an utter up killing Optimus off and then having the shows writers back tracking by writing rodimus as such a whining cry baby that you can't wait to get Optimus back. If only they'd had the courage of their convictions and shown us not only Rodimus doubting himself and coming to terms with his new role, but showing us exactly why the Matrix 'chose' him!
Something, it must be said, Mr Furman managed to do in the UK comic. There, Rodimus came across as a flawed, but determined leader - and earnt the respect of his comrades in the process.
i never thought the Movie was wrong to show Optimus Prime being killed - war isn't after all, much of a picnic. I liked that it showed the realities of war (and showed the Decepticons as a credible force instead of cackling buffoons building super weapons), and that as well as heroic sacrifices (like OP's), there are also pointless and unnecessary deaths (Prowl, Ratchet, Brawn etc). A very real thing to show kids, and certainly something that's stayed with me since I were a lad.

Like mentioned, he showed promise in the Movie but in fact that was the end line for him there ironically. Shame he had the touch for a minute or two.

I think Rodney fails a few times, pretty much from the get-go with Five Faces of Darkness...
"oh, a mysterious new enemy is attacking all my pals! I know, i'll go into a coma and not tell anyone why for an hour! Yay me!"

I think that Magnus would have been a better leader, after all Magnus had to hold Rodimus' hand all throughout his leadership

Yeah he was a bit of a let down, I did like the episode The ultimate weapon, where he filled Primes shoes pretty well. Back in 1986 when I saw the film I was gobsmaked when Ultra Magnus got blown up by the sweeps and Hot rod turned into Rodimus, because at the time I was reading Target 2006 where Magnus is the new leader, Magnus and Galvertron were dubbed in the comic as the new leaders. Also in England we got Rodimus around March 87 almost a year later than Magnus and Galvertron which came out around May 86, so I was really suprised when he appeared in the film.

Does such a serious transformers discussion deserve to be in the spam section? Or does that give me license to mock rodney's orangeness and change to subject to shoes or something?

True Fudge but for some reason I could only do a poll here, if it were to be moved, then fine

that's cos polls are only allowed here.
i've only ever seen the toon and read a few comics. so going on the cartoon he was a tit. the movie he was fine, he "grew up", in season 3 he moaned and cried and then nearly lost all hope and the universe only for a dead former leader came to the rescue.

We can create polls in other sections, just not in all of them.

No. He wasn't perfect and he dwelled a little too much on how he matched up to Optimus Prime but I think he did a good job. He managed to stop Unicron returning and thwarted the Quints time and time again. I still prefer Hot Rod though.
