I have just found my original S.T.A.R.S paper work that came with the mail away. I remember back in December 1986 recieving the Stars base through the mail, it was great you got a membership card, a massive poster that was the same image as the UK 86 check list with Gavertron and Ultra Magnus on, a iron on patch, and the card board base. I have found a photo of the Japanese version and it is a lot different, it also didn't contain any membership card or paper work. Does anyone from America remember what they got with their S.T.A.R.S mail away. And has anyone got any photos of the cardboard base so I can reminisce.

The writing off the STARS mailaway sheet.

S.T.A.R.S

Secret Transformers Autobot Rescue Squad

On a far away planet light years away from Earth the struggle between the Heroic Autobots and Evil Decepticons began.

There, on Cyberton, a unique intelligent life form existed - sophisticated robots who could transform into individual warrior machines.

The battle between the two sides - the peace loving Autobots and the Evil Decepticons - continued. As war raged across Cybertron it destroyed all in its path leaving a desolate and barren land, draining the planet of its source of energy.

Both sides needed power to fuel their highly developed weapons and machines.

As energy supplies dwindled Optimus Prime, the brave leader of the Autobots, realised that the only way good was going to triumph over evil was to travel further afield in search of new forms of power.

So Optimus Prime and his team blasted off from cyber Ron in their spaceship- The Ark.

The Decepticons overheard Optimus Prime’s plans and, led by their wicked leader Megatron, followed the Autobots hoping to discover new energy supplies.

However, both sides were at the mercy of the unknown forces of space. G-forces dragged the Ark down to crash on a strange planet - known to us as Earth.

The Ark had crashed into a dormant volcano where it lay for four million years until it was disturbed by an eruption.

The Ark’s computer reconstructed the Decepticons and the Autobots giving them the power to transform into life-forms like those found on Earth, both sides could disguise themselves as earth vehicles, machines and weapons.

The battle between good and evil continued, however both sides were in search of new sources of power.

The Autobots befriended two humans, Buster Witwicky and his father, Sparkplug. Sparkplug was an experienced motor mechanic who agreed to help the Autobots by looking for a formula which could transform earth fuel into Transformer fuel.

Buster and Sparkplug then became involved in the fight between good and evil. The Decepticons wanted Sparkplug’s knowledge and therefore he was constantly under threat, he was snatched and had to be rescued. Buster too was put in danger when Optimus Prime transferred the bulk of Creation Matrix’s (the vital force which gives life to new Transformers) power to Buster’s mind as Prime himself was in danger.

As you can see by the help given to the Autobots from Buster Witwicky and Sparkplug, Earth Allies from an important role in aiding the Autobots to defeat the Decepticons.

Ultra Magnus, the new Autobot leader has the vital task of recruiting Earth Allies to join Buster and Sparkplug and form a new team to help defeat evil.

You are now a member of S.T.A.R.S. - Secret Transformer Autobot Rescue Squad - and you have an important mission; to help defeat the Decepticons for once and for all.

So make sure you wear your badge and carry your membership card at all times, to show that you are one of the Secret Transformers Autobot Rescue Squad!

The Battle Goes on!

There's a Dutch guy that tried to sell that command center for €400. I'd say that is stupid - paying that much for just a piece of card board that could very easily be reproduced.

I see what your saying. But I remember reading toyfair back in Summer 1997 and they valued it at $250 back then. I believe with all the cards, posters and cardboard base it is worth a lot of money. No one really kept their original so it is worth a load of money.

Yeah true, but what about the membership card with the hologram on. And the paper work?

Most folks probably wouldn't care too much about that stuff, man - they'd want to have a replica of the actual command centre over an obscure membership card.

Isn't printing on stiff cardboard a little difficult?

Is it just me or does that cardboard base kinda look like something out of the UK comics?

most good colour laser printers can print on thick paper or light card. but you woudn't get the shine unless you used something like a wax printer. then they cost lots.

Here something terribly anal from my days at a leading office suupliers... Most Inkjet and Laser printers will handle thin card of 160gsm (regular A4 is typically 80 or 90gsm). Business cards (if you've ever tried printing them) tend to be thicker at 280gsm, and photo paper can be up to the same weight (280gsm). Anyhting thicker and you will knacker your printer! Glossy photo paper may give the shine you'd be after should you want to reproduce this, but it would be a bloody expensive way to go about it. Otherwise, as Casperuk says, wax would be the way to go.

if i recall correctly, gsm = grams per square metre.

The UK S.T.A.R.S base was made out of really chunky card. It would be so expensive to reproduce no one would bother. It was easily twice as big as the Japanese one.

Related question- does anybody remember anything about the later G.U.A.S.C. (Gratuitous Use of Acronyms to Sound Cool) offer that was designed to promote Powermaster Optimus Prime?

I recall two teams, S.T.O.P. and H.E.L.P.- Sureshot and Hot Rod were members of H.E.L.P., and I'm pretty sure Mindwipe was a member of S.T.O.P.  I *think* STOP stood for Seek and Terminate Optimus Prime.

No idea what HELP stood for.  Hide Eggs and Laugh at Prime possibly, if Hot Rod was just messing about.

I was a STARS member :) We should all co-ordinate ourselves and spam MI5 and the CIA with urgent warnings about Decepticon attacks.

Yeah I remember that. You could send off for a Powermaster Optimus Prime T shirt with that promotion. And around the same time you could send off for Transformers that weren't avialable in the UK. Reflector and Shockwave. It used to drive me up the wall that in the U.K you couldn't get Swoop, Blaster, Trypticon, and Devastator etc.

S.T.O.P. in the name of L.O.V.E.

We do our shopping at L.U.D.I.C.R.O.U.S.A.C.R.O.N.Y.M.S.R.U.S.

Starscream never forgave the Autobots for abbreviating his idea for a special Human/Transformer alliance acronym.

He still thinks the Special Terran Attack Reserve Squad Chucking Rancid Eggs At Megatron idea he and Optimus had in the pub one night was a winner, and has never forgiven Optimus Prime for ringing Decepticon base and telling on him to Soundwave.

You know, I really missed your humour at times

Thank you!

It's a shame, really, that more wasn't made of these things.  The weedy Unicron cultists in US Issue #74 could have gained a whole army of horn-wearing human allies desperate to gain their company and favour if they'd only thought to call themselves Mentally Inadequate Satanic Bunglers.
