Thoughts, people? I'm still watching it right now. Not overly impressed so far, and I really wanted to be. And Gwen again?

Now he's eating a sandwich. Only about 800 years or more too early.

You know, it's early days but I think I like what I've seen so far. The guy playing Merlin is quite good. The only problem is the re-imagining of Arthur as someone who is already a monarch (We all know he starts off a peasant who pulls Uther's sword from the stone and seals his destiny) and quite a snobby monarch at that. Good rivalry between him and Merlin though.
What accent was Eve Myles trying to pull off? It sounded like she was trying to be English but the welsh accent kept creeping in. She should've stuck to her real accent.
(As an englishman who lived in Wales as a kid, I can tell you that that accent is a killer to get rid of. It's taken me over 10 years so far and it still creeps in from time to time!)

That's explained something to me. I was reading an article about this show the other day and I couldn't grasp what they were doing with Arthur. All the stories I know have Arthur as a young biy whilst Merlin is an old man. I wasn't able to catch it last night but think I'll give it a look on the iPlayer.

The BBC love messing with the tales. Surprised Arthur isn't black, Merlin a girl called merlina with super cool style and kick ass ninja skillz
It's just they want to appeal to da kidz so all the main characters of it will be young and multicultural etc.
If only they just retold/embellished the tales with the bonus of havign good actors and great scenery. It works.

Yeah, the Beebs Robin Hood couldn't hold a candle next to the HTV series of the 1980s Or Maid Marian and her Merry Men, for that matter. I'm prepared to give Merlin a chance though - it is good that the success of Doctor Who has allowed programmes like this to be made.

I've yet to watch Merlin. Got it recorded on my generic digital recording device, so after I've watched the pilot of Fringe tonight i might give it a go. But if they've stuffed it up to the extent that they stuffed up robin hood, i doubt i'll be that impressed. That said, a few buxom wenches in a mud wrestling scene might change my mind... Am i in luck?

Managed to see Merlin tonight and I enjoyed it. I thought the start was a bit slow and I don't see why the cobwebs had to be included in the singing scene but those are my only gripes (Oh, and the time-travelling sandwich ). I'll definitely watch/record the next episode though.

I've decided that i only dislike the abuse of the characters I know rather than the series. It's a shame they can't just be medievil characters without bastardising folk lore.Only way to get it commissioned i guess sigh.

Cyberjam's er, interesting spellings and syntax probably have more in common with olde englishe.
Here's a quote from Sir Thomas More (a little later in the time frame, but you get the idea) :
"But if only here this word Death, but also let sink into our hertes, the very fantasye and depe imaginacion thereof, we shall parceive therby that we wer never so gretly moved by the beholding of the Daunce of Death pictured in Poules, as we shal fele ourself stered and altered by the feling of that imaginacion in our hertes. And no marvell. For these pictures expresse only ye lothely figure of our bony bodies, bitten away ye flesh."

After a few episodes, I reckon this beats Robin hood any day! (I still prefer Robin of Sherwood to the rubbish we've endured for two whole autumns now!).
