So since we have/had a few players on here, has anyone played with the new 5th edition rules yet? I'm starting to get back into the fold again (haven't had the opportunity the past couple of years), just ordered 2 of the new box sets, a Strike Force and a Linebreaker Squadron. Planning to get one of those Land Raider Redeemers on Saturday too, although only for the new flamers.

I think I'm going to need some new cases..

This is actually why I stopped playing. I don't know the edition numbers, but the change I recall is the edition where the 40K logo went from being all goldy to being green and black stone. It just frustrated me that an army that I'd spent a lot of time and money on was now worthless under the new rules i.e. I'd have to give Games Workshop even more of my money. My friends and I kept playing our own games with the previous rule system but we even stopped that after a while. Now I just have masses of old High Elf and Chaos Space Marine miniatures taking up space. It's a shame as I really like the actual miniatures, but I can't display them anywhere.

I was never really into Warhammer myself, but growing up in my teens, I had a mate who collected entire armies of Space Marines and Orcs.  I used to wonder how he could so meticulously paint things that were so small.
I did briefly think about dabbling in Warhammer at one point, though I never did.

That'd be the 2nd to 3rd update. That was a big change, but it didn't make current armies "worthless", just changed a lot of the mechanics. 4th and 5th have essentially been updates to 3rd edition, mostly just points balances and rule changes.

I get more enjoyment out of building/painting anyway. I haven't played a great deal since 2nd edition since most gamers are, to be fair, c**ts. There's only so much anal-retentive rule arguing and "Why are you using OLD terminators when the new ones are so much better?" (and would only cost £90 to upgrade..) I can tolerate before calling it a day.

Yes, I recall that. My school/college had an after school club for tabletop gaming. It was only an hour and a half so we all brought 500-point armies so we could have fairly quick battles. But a lot of people brought their entire armies, set them all up, then got bored and starting arguing about who would win in a fistfight between, say, two of the Phoenix Lords.
I find some of the older miniatures better too. I have the older Teclis miniature and I find it has much more charm than the newer one.

5th edition boxset you got a small fortunes worth of models quite cheap, i still use some of the older models.  I never buy direct from gw - ebay shops underprice them hehehe. Playing the game is another matter altogether,  some just want to win at all costs, others gripe over a millimeter difference - you cancharge/cant charge.  Whatever happened to gamesmanship and just enjoy the game.  - Not that id lose on purpose

i only find that the idea of buying the discounted stuff on ebay if im going to buy a lot in bulk as once you take postage into account the idea of savng 1.50 ona  box of space marines i might as well buy it from workshop, i wont buy second hand models on ebay if theyve painted (usually terribly too boot) but i will buy second stuff on sprues and stuck together.

I still paint a lot but i dont play as much as i used to as we never seem to get round to it, Im still working between Imperial fists (of whic i want about 6 new land speeder now that theyve finally fixed that sodding broken mould and the new land raider) and my nightlords

Have picked up a few bargains off there - black reach set for £30 comes to mind (great spacemarines).  6!! landspeeders - be warned, a gust of wind (or space marine flatulence) and landspeeders go bye bye, although parking a vindicator in front of them  helps keep em shiney.  - oohh nightlords - do you paintem with the lightning effect all over the armour?

Been reading the new SM codex - and it yields the return of the Conversion Beamer!

..S10, AP1, Heavy 1, Blast. When fired at 40-72".

What. The. Hell.

That's like, the absolute definition of broken.

Salamanders have one special character, Ultra Marines get about 10. There's also Shrike from Raven Guard andImp. Fists' Cap Lysander.. that's all I can remember.

WHAT? thats nuts - so basically space marines now have a rail gun - and its probably man portable so you dont ahve to buy a tank or battlesuit to stick it on

Only the Master of the Forge can have one (so one-per chapter).

Which in a way is no bad thing, as he's easier to take out than a Land Raider.
