 As far as I'm aware there isn't a BW 3.

 First of there's regular BW that was released over here, then there was a Japan-only series known as Beast Wars Neo which had it's own cartoon and alot of new characters. There's also Beast Wars the second which, I think, is mainly vehicles?  But I think that was exclusiv to Japan too.

All three are different stories that are somewhat ordered one after another.

 - BW 1 was the English CGI one
 - BW2 was the one with Lio Convoy (white lion) against Galvatron (purple dragon/drill) also there was a movie for it.
 - BW Neo, the third was led by Big Convoy (mammoth) against Magmatron (the three dinos).

Im not sure of the stories but they are different.

In Japan, it went like this:

Beast Wars (US Season 1)
Beast Wars II/Second
Beast Wars Neo
Beast Wars Metals (US Seasons 2&3, I think)

Beast Wars II was made to fill time between Season 1 and 2, occurring on a once-inhabited planet, Gaia, where the Cybertrons were Lio Convoy and the non-show Beast Wars guys (many recoloured) fought Galvatron and a bunch of G2/Machine Wars guys who hadn't been released in Japan before. And some G1s. Essentially Galvatron and co were trying to drain the planet's (Angolmois) energy to power a big spaceship, and the 'trons were trying to stop them.

In BW Neo, Big Convoy and his crew of zoo animals are off round the galaxy looking for Angolmois energy, scattered from the end of BW2, which the Blentrons (non-show deluxe size fuzors), servants of Unicron, are trying to get to reactivate Unicron.

They both happen in Japanese BW continuity, but I don't believe either have any reference to the main CGI show.

The IDW BW story is supposed to fit in with this idea, but fails because Furman's an idiot who's never seen either II or Neo and I don't think even knows much of what happens in them, and has made it about as logical as Armada leading off from G1.

Furman took the concepts and characters of BW II and Neo and re-arranged the events for the US continuity. We know this new, Western revised version has many plot changes though.

The extras on the US version, the makers said they kept pushing it but the bosses/Hasbro/whoever didn't stop them, they just liked it. lol
