Got my Transformers: Animated Transform and Roll Out DVD yesterday. I won't give you my views on the special movie but the general DVD set.

Packaging
The cover art is exactly the same as the North American version, except  for the BBFC logo and disc specs layout on the back. The amaray case is also clear instead of black. Inside, there is a thick booklet advertising all of Paramount's and Dreamworks other kids stuff, with a quarter of a page given to the Energon and Cybertron DVDs that no-one bought. Because of the clear case, the other side of the sleeve has adverts for Animated toys on one side and the 2009 annual on the other. This is unlike the NA version, which came with a leaflet for toys and merchandise.

Disc
New Hasbro Entertainment Logo shows up (not even a Paramount logo) . On the main menu, there are options for Play, Animated Shorts, Audio Options and Subtitles. Subtitles weren't in the NA version. Basically you have your choice of English or German audio and subtitles, with English Hard of Hearing subtitles as well. The German audio intro is an entertaining listen.

Video and Audio
A solid visual and audio presentation, especially for a PAL release, so no complaints here. The episode does suffer from the fact that it should be in widescreen (like the whole series should), but Americans don't like widescreen, so all DVDs for the forseeable future will be like this.

You mean they actually made the cartoon in widescreen, or am I reading that wrong?

That's right. It was mentioned at BotCon 08 that they animated in widescreen HD but cut it to full screen because most Americans don't have widescreen TVs. You can notice it throughout the series, where characters look weirdly placed on screen.

Despite being animated in a widescreen format, the series is delivered to Cartoon Network in a cropped-down, fullscreen format, and is subsequently broadcast this way. Alas, the series has been released on DVD in this format, too. Fans could glimpse various widescreen images in a promo reel screened at various conventions before the launch of the series, which was later included on the DVD packaged with action figure two-pack, "The Battle Begins".

And now the UK distributor is stupid enough not to fix this error. Brilliant.

All versions are the same. Expect a widescreen edition with extras in a couple of years.

Why hasn't America embraced widescreen then?

I'd bet it's because of some stupid reason like they're losing half the picture.

Well at least they can't handle it any worse than the BBC here in The Netherlands.

Whatever BBC1 and 2 broadcast here just get parts on the side chopped off. No black bars at the top and bottom - just cut off the sides to make it fit. Insane.

Of course it could be caused by the UK -> NL transfer, but those are the only channels that I've seen with this problem.

It's very odd that the yanks are eager to embrace hd-telly, but They're scared of widescreen. Kind of spoils the point of having a crisp lovely high def picture if They're gonna go and stanley knife half the picture because they don't know about their telly's 'full screen' button.

I'd have thought they'd love widescreen, because it would make them look thinner when they stand next to it.
