Surprised the old thread hasn't been resurrected, but we may as well have a new one now that we have more members.

Second ep aired last night, and was far superior to the disappointing first episode (not that the first didn't have any merits, though its tone was worrying due to the emergence of Catherine Tate as a character).

The characters were our school's Latin textbook characters! Ho ho!

It was entertaining enough for an early episode, since you usually have to wait till about halfway through the season for the gold (Human Nature/Family of Blood come to mind). The eruption scene was well handled and impressive to look at, it was clear that the director really wanted to convey that this really happaned, a whole city really was wiped off the map, and thousands of people really did suffocate to death in a matter of minutes. It would have been all to easy to gloss over that fact and just go for a big explosion from a distance, completely ignoring the real fear and chaos of the eruption on the ground, which as it was, really helped to bring this rather distant and dusty historical event to home. Also the monsters themselves were quite realistic (as giant magma demons go) since it's obvious that The Mill are visibly improving their CGI with every series. Just look back at some of the season one monsters for a comparison.

Any members here members of Outpost Gallifrey? It's the mother of all DW
forums. Last weeks' 'Rose' thread turned into a 12 page monster & that was
only tuesday when I post a comment.

I tend not to post, though I am a member. I find Whovian's a little much for more sometimes.

I still can't fathom how catherine tate got a regular part in this, she can't act for toffee and keeps reverting into her various characters off her tv show. At least when billie was being bad at acting she wore a skimpy top, whereas ms tate is hardly an oil painting. Still, i can always shut my eyes and mumble whenever she comes on...
Oh, and what kid's tv show was the psychic roman girl from? She looked familiar.

The Tardis got seatbelts in season 2. Now it gets airbags/flotation devices!

I wouldn't say that after the end of the previous episode. Her emotional range is so far greater than David 'Grit-My-Teeth-In-Anger' Tennant.

Yeah, same here. Cambridge Latin Course textbooks, aren't they? This actually raises something I noticed about the episode, Caecilius, Metella and Quintus were actually real people who lived in Pompeii at the time, although Caecilius has had his profession changed for narrative purposes (He was actually a banker). I was just impressed with that level of research - not only did they look out proper Roman names, but those of some people who were actually there.
The episode itself was also very good, going into the nitty-gritty of time travel and paradoxes. He may have lack of emotional range, but I can't think of anyone who could replace Tennant as The Doctor - I think he's fantastic.

I don't think they really researched it, they just stole it from the text book. Was the slave character called Clemens too? I don't think they address him by name, but maybe its in the credits.

bit off topic-

So the last episode of Torchwood- Jack was basically buried under Cardiff
for 1900 years + on top of the 100 years he has lived from 1900 ish- 2008.

No wonder he is so unhinged.

Also, so now they have a few of those time travel enabled arm bands- that
seem far better than the tardis at their job to be fair.

See? Russel T. Davies is a fool.

Why are the Timelords so important if they have second rate time-travel technology that requires 6 people to operate at once? Completely screws up the canon.

Indeed- in fact when Jack used his arm bad at the end of Bad Wolf to try to
get back he was 100 years out.

This new one seems pin point accurate!
