ADV have imploded.  No idea what that means for the stuff ADV does here, but I don't think funi release R2 stuff.

I feel absolutely no pity for ADV, they've been price gouging for years.  The only thing I've bought from them in the past 3 years was an R1 Guyver set.   Cost me over œ50, but since I'm a Guyver fanboy, I had to stomach it.  I still remember when King of Bandit Jing came out, and they were selling 3 episodes on a dvd for œ20.

I think I saw a Lady Death animated film that they released once and that about my only experience with them

I think it's quite a shame, but I could see what everone is talking about here. I used to wait years before those things got put in a bargain bin before I could afford to purchase them. Never mind, hopefully some company like Revelation or Manga Entertainment could pick up the rights to most of these shows.

My only experience with ADV was buying the complete Street Fighter II V series on VHS, way back in the mid-90s.  Took around 2 years (or maybe longer!) for them to release the whole run, but I got 'em all!  Should really buy them on DVD...

Manga released the series in a boxed set a few years back.  Very cheap it was too, I think I only paid œ30 for 26 episodes.  As opposed to œ20 for 3-4 episodes...

I think it's a shame as they were, IMO, mch better at getting the more recent series than manga are. I believe they got the UK rights for Gurren Lagann. But you're right about the pricing. I'm working my way through the new Guyver series (Couple of volumes behind now) and also have all of RahXephon and they always charged £20 a disc.

ADV is the main reason I started buying R1 anime.  Far, far cheaper, and a lot of the market was held by Funimation, Bandai(who bought the licencse of Gurren Lagann off of ADV a few months back) and Geneon(who are sadly now also dead, their single volumes were very reasonably priced).

Funi will now become the market leader, and since they have always been reasonable in pricing stuff(the most recent thing I bought from them was one piece season 1, part 1, 2 months ago, dubbed well, subbed well and 13 episodes for $50rrp, so around $35 most places), I'm quite happy with the way things have gone.  As long as they don't get to greedy, but a monopoly can work quite well in the anime industry, funi should have more power when bidding for series, and get them cheaper.

Madman have a monopoly in australia, but their stuff is top notch, I bought the entire Dragon Ball series from them last year(Funi can't make the first 13 eps uncut due to licensing issues) and have been very happy with it.

I think Bandai only got the US rights to Gurren Lagann. ADV still have the European rights to it
That aside, what do you play your R1 DVDs on?

A mix of dvd players and computers.  Switched all my DVD players to region 0, my computers run vlc.  Also have some extra region free software for my comps in case of some form of RPC2 that actually affects me, but thankfully, none has as of yet.

i started buying region code free imports cause they are far cheaper for me anyways, but most of the anime i watch was adv stuff, my manga however i only had a few adv things, but they allways yanked me around, pushing back releases and cancelling mangas, so i really really cannot sympathize with them i mean i dunno if any of you have read YOTSUBA&! but if you have you can understand how frustrating it is to get vol 1-4 then have to wait an aditional 6 months for 5, then when 6 is sheduled to be released it gets cancelled....in japan they are up to vol 8....so yeah frustrating

That's another stupid thing they did, they bought licenses for far too much manga, a lot of which didn't sell because they flooded the market, and also couldn't handle the strain of translating too much at once, and most of them ended up cancelled after one or two books.
