Fantastic Four
The choice of director for Fantastic Four didn't exactly inspire me but after watching the trailer, I have some faith in it. I know it'll be better than the 1994 F.F. movie.
What am I talking about, I hear you ask?
In the early 90s, a Fantastic Four movie was made. However, it was never meant to be released to the general public. To cut a long story short, it was filmed as part of a complicated licensing deal in order for the studio to retain the rights to the Fantastic Four.
I've seen it. It's faithful to the original F.F. comics. It's fun for it's time, despite an anti-climatic ending. But it's not spectacular and whilst the actors all did the best they could, it's probably a blessing in disguise that it was never released.
Batman Begins
I hope this film is good, I really do. I've always been a fan of Batman. By that, I'm talking about the original Batman, the one who worked alone, the one who struck fear into the hearts of criminals, the one who was slightly unhinged and waged a war against crime.
Michael Keaton was my favourite actor to play Batman. I believe the 1989 movie is underrated and it did a good job of returning Batman to his dark roots at a time when the campy 60s exploits of Adam West and Burt Ward were still fresh in people's minds. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were decent films but not as good as the first two, directed by Tim Burton.
It'll be nice to see The Scarecrow and Ras Al Ghul in the movie. It would have been so easy for the producers to go with a name like The Joker or The Penguin but by going with two lesser known villains, we may be in for a treat. Plus, the film will have little CGI, which is a bonus in my book.
Is the superhero craze over? Has the bubble burst? I don't know.
At one time, you had to wait for superhero movies, back when DC Comics was king of the big screen. You had Superman (1978). Superman II (1980). Superman III (1983). Supergirl (1984). Superman IV (1987). Batman (1989). Batman Returns (1992). Batman Forever (1995). Batman & Robin (1997).
Back then, you had time to breathe and to anticipate films. Of course, DC has had little dominance since the 90s and Marvel is King of the Big Screen now. With each passing day, you hear about a new Marvel movie in production. But I guess as long as people see them, they'll continue making them. And as long as the scripts are good, I'll be watching them.
Other movies
With regards to movies, there's nothing I'm looking forward to much, apart from War of the Worlds. At first, I was a little dismayed that the movie would not be set in Victorian England, like the original H.G. Wells novel. However, giving it a contemporary setting may be interesting and with Spielberg directing, and Tom Cruise performing on-screen, it may be a good movie.
