So, what are people watching right now?  There seems to have been quite a drop in the number of decent anime series recently, to the extent of which I'm now watching only the following:

One Piece

Reborn
-A Mafia anime about a guy who gets made heir to the largest mafia family because the current head has no son and he is vaguely related.  Comedy/Action.

Major
-Series about baseball, which somehow magically makes the worlds's most boring sport somewhat interesting.
Comedy/Sports

Eyeshield 21
-As above, but american football.
Comedy/Sports

Slayers Revolution
The new, fourth series of the legendary fantasy anime.  This is the first new animation of this series in about 10 years, but they somehow managed to get the original voice actors in, and it's as good as ever.
Fantasy/Comedy

So that's basically what I'm watching.  I watch detective conan and bleach on and off, but there's not much point in watching bleach at the moment, it's too close to the manga for my liking, and their filler(non-canon) arcs tend to be of a far lower quality then One Piece's.

I'm currently looking forward to one of the greatest anime series ever; Hajime no Ippo(a boxing anime) coming back in January after a 5 year absence(since which the manga has continued).  No word on whether they've managed to get the original voice ators back, but I hope so, as they were a chief reason as to why this series was so astonishingly good.

So...anyone got any anime they'd recommend?  A new series, or a forgotten one?

Wow, you've managed to forget about what you're currently watching?  Well done, that's quite impressive.

Oh yes, one that I forgot to mention is Gintama, a anime set in future japan where samurai are outlawed and aliens have taken over.  It's quite fnny, thoug a few of the puns don't translate so well.

I didn't mean it quite like that.  I just have an occasional habit of losing track with things like character names and minor plot details.  Which is understandable when you also take all the toku I watch into account...

Meh, I was only looking for a brief overview, in any event, it's not necessary with the series you named, since I've seen them.

And yes...Plot & Toku don't tend to go together overmuch... ^_^

Also, are you guys both enjoying naruto?  I quite liked it to begin with, but after the whole Gaara arc ended, it seems to have never regained that level, not even in the latest manga...

Im in two minds with Naruto right now. It still has an appeal to me, which is more the comical side more than anything. The action has been sub-par, and when there is a build up to a fight....the build up takes 10 years, to only have the fight take 5 minutes.

What im really cheesed about, is how characters are given an introduction, you are made to think something will come of them..then they are pretty much pushed aside. Sai is a good example.

I havent read much of the manga at all, and i believe i have caught up to myself in the anime ( latest ep to be subbed ).

However, i have heard 2 things which sound interesting  if true.

I'm liking Naruto at the moment cos of Hidan and Kakuzu, but I feel that'll be short lived as they'll no doubt shift focus onto something else soon or do another filler arc.  Naruto well and truly lost its edge to me during the 80 odd episodes of continous filler, and is only now starting to regain some of it during Shippuuden's non-filler dragouts.

I'm really just a fan of mecha anime. I've seen other things like Dominion Tank Police but when it's down to my own choice mecha just always attracts me. The only series I'm currently watching is Gundam 00 which I'm really enjoying. I'm also in the process of buying the new Guyver series on DVD but that's taken a back seat because I'm saving for my holiday. I've just finished watching Gundam Wing - I saw it dubbed on Cartoon Network about 7 years ago so I got a subbed version recently and it's just as good as I remember. That's what got me watching 00.

Series I've watched and enjoyed are: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Duh, but I thought I'd list it for completeness), Gurren Lagann (Still my fave anime ever), RahXephon, Macross Plus, Project A-Ko, Dragon Half and Martian Successor Nadesico. Oh, and GaoGaiGar.

Can't say I really liked Evangelion too much.  It was a goodish series, that went rapidly downhill at around the halfway point.  Also, I hated the main character.  Shinji could seriously have done with a spine replacement.  I also didn't like the effect it had on mech anime, which was generally to make it a lot darker and gloomier.  Thankfull, Gaogaigar came out and pretty much flew in the face of it.  Courage and guts.  Yes.

I liked what there was of dragon half(which sadly wasn't much), and I really liked Nadesico, though it was frankly criminal how the best character in the show was removed only a few episodes in(I would love a GekiGengar tv show).

Protoform, what other anime genres have you tried?  I suppose the two biggest apart from Mecha are really Shonen(Dragon Ball, Hajime No Ippo, One Piece, Bleach)which tend to emphasise training, one on one battles, and comedy, and then fantasy(Slayers, El Hazard).

Oh, and yes, I love the '05 guyver series, I think it's as good as the old one(although the english dubbing isn't anywhere near as good as the old dub), and it goes far further then the old series.

you have to understand the concept of it to understand it, yes it did confuse me and still does lol, buti enjoyed watching it, im hoping the new one will explain exactky what its about though

carnt beat the gundam, gundam wing i think is the best or destiny as they are just truly amazing with good story lines i think

but so is macross dyrl the original which is my all time fave followed closely by macross zero

Absolutely. I really love the whole "Burning Justice" idea the animes like GaoGaiGar and Gurren Lagann have. It's really cheesy, but I still love it all the same. Might be a factor in why I like Car Robots so much.

Lord Darkstorm wrote:

Really not that many. I'm just a massive fan of giant robots, obviously started by Transformers when I was small. In the past I've seen other animes like Castle of Cagliostro, Legend of the Four Kings, El Hazard and Dominion Tank Police and I try and see any "popular" animes like Akira, Miyazaki's stuff and Ghost in the Shell (Not seen any of Standalone Complex though) and I've enjoyed them all. But those are all animes that other people have introduced me to. When it's purely my choice I always go for mecha as for me nothing beats robots kicking the crap out of one another. To be even more picky, I don't really like older series as I don't like the animation and robot design. Not a fan of FighBird for that exact reason. It looked really promising, but the human designs were just not my thing. Yet GaoGaiGar, which is the exact same premise but with better animation I absolutely love.

Evangelion was fine until Gainax blew the budget and gave us that ending.  The End of Evangelion wasn't that much of improvement, but I'd gladly take it over the series ending anyday.

Although they annoyed me more with Kare Kano to be honest.  The last few episodes were painful to watch because of the cheap out tactics, and of course the lack of a proper ending.  I even had to resort to reading the manga for the full story cos so much content was left out.

I remember seeing that for the first time. After it finished I stared at nothing in particular for about 5 minutes before arriving at the thought "What the hell was that?"

Heh.  A bad ending can ruin an anime series(death note, full metal alchemist).  Evangelions end annoyed me, but in great truth I hadn't found the series particularly earth shattering anyway, so I soon forgot it and moved on to another anime series I watched - El Hazard, which surely has one of the greatest villains of all time, Katsuhiko Jinnai.

Good times.

I didn't hate the anime version of Death Note's ending.  I know it wasn't as sadistic as the one in the manga/movie, but it had its own illogical pro-Light charm.

And didn't they change the whole thing after Greed showed up in FMA?  Maybe that's the reason why there's another FMA anime in the works...

Meh.  To be honest, I wasn't too impressed by the manga of deathnote either.  If it had ended 6 books sooner(at the time skip), I'd have hailed it as one of the greatest series ever.  As it is, the entire second half just screams cash in.

Do you think it'd have been any better if they just ended it like in the first Rewrite special?
