Anyone else see this as pretty hypocritical?

Ok..so they're raising awareness of climate change, and all that jazz. Fine, I have no problem with that, I'm a believer of, man's involvement in destroying our planet - at the same time, I'm not an eco-crusader - but I am a "lets try and do our bit" kind of guy...yes, Captain Planet had an affect on me.

but..is a global concert really the way to go about rectifiying it?

Let me explain my problem with it...the point is to save the world, and convincing people to cut carbon emmisions. Fine, nice, moral idea.

but..here's the thing.

Firstly, the bands performing are probably using enough powere to run their speakers and equipment to create a fair deal of carbon emissions as is. Second, most of them have flown all over the world to get to their respective venues, again, creating emissions.

Next, what about all the people who go to see these concerts live? surely they've not walked, surely they've driven (with adequate provided parking), or flown, or got the bus, or any other type of fossil-fuelledd transport. there are millions of peopled worldwide at these concerts...so how does that REDUCE carbon emissions?

Lastly, they've actively promoted this on TV, and are broadcasting the concert worldwide. Again, the TV's showing this so-called environmentally aware concert is using fosil fuels, creating carbon emissions to broadcast it, plus, what the general populace OF PRACTICALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD uses to power their TV's, to watch a concert that most of them will see only the entertainemt value of, and none of the environmental value of.

I mean, I'm all up for saving the environment, an I realise the irony of my kick-off, when I'm sat her using a dcomputer, run by  electricity, powered by a carbon-emiiting power station to post this....but surely...they've encouraged carbon emission more that discouraged by all of the above?

Honestly Global Warming is nothing more than a money making scheme for both Governments and Scientists. The temperature of the earth and CO2 levels have ALWAYS tracked one after the other for MILLENIA. The current CO2 levels and Temperature levels are actually LATE on the cycle, if we were having a drastic effect then they would be EARLY.

Oh and there is the inconvenience of MARS heating up at the same rate as Earth is, oddly Ignored by those who Tax and Profit off "Green" Schemes!!

Tell me the one about the Tooth Fairy its much more truthful.

Heat Wave Fuels Western Wildfires

By MARTIN GRIFFITH, Associated Press Writer

< =text/>document.write(getElapsed("20070707T230138Z")); 2 hours ago

RENO, Nev. - Wildfires burned mobile homes, closed highways and forced evacuations from a popular wilderness park Saturday as firefighters worked through scorching heat to contain blazes throughout the West. No injuries were reported.

Lightning sparked about a dozen fires that had charred about 55 square miles in remote northern Nevada, where temperatures in Elko were expected to reach 98 degrees on Saturday.

The two biggest fires broke out Friday in Elko County. One had burned 36 square miles, or 23,000 acres, along the Idaho border, said Mike Brown, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It was 10 percent contained Saturday, officials said.

The other fire had blackened 11 square miles, or 7,000 acres, about five miles southwest of Carlin. It burned two mobile homes and several smaller structures, and shut down a section of Interstate 80.

"Both fires burned actively last night and showed extreme fire behavior," said Sam Hicks, fire management officer for the Nevada Division of Forestry.

The interstate was closed for six hours overnight as the blaze neared the highway, fire information officer Tracie Winfrey said. On Saturday morning, the fire was 40 percent contained.

In California, three wildfires ignited by lightning spread quickly Saturday morning through a wilderness park, officials said.

More than 400 firefighters were battling the blaze, which has consumed 17,000 acres of the 2 million-acre Inyo National Forest, forest spokeswoman Nancy Upham said Saturday. Firefighters were searching for and evacuating an unknown number of day hikers and overnight backpackers.

A section of Highway 395, which runs along the eastern spine of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, was closed, and many smaller roads leading from the highway into the mountains were also closed. Campgrounds and a lodge had been evacuated, Upham said.

In Southern California, a wildfire burned into a wilderness area of Los Padres National Forest, threatening some campgrounds and showing no sign of slowing down as it moved through tinder-dry chaparral in Santa Barbara County. The fire was heading east and threatened some campgrounds and the historic Manzana schoolhouse, a century-old wooden building, fire spokesman Andy Yamamoto said.

The fire was burning in a steep, remote area in brush and oak woodlands that had not seen flames for about 40 years, Yamamoto said.

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze near Rulison, Colo., that had destroyed a house and two other buildings. And a fire in central Utah forced the evacuation of a power plant and threatened several homes, railroad lines and bridges. It was triggered Friday by lightning.

The fires in the West have been fueled by an oppressive heat wave that has been felt throughout the region for days, but that has now eased a bit in places. Still, forecasters predicted little relief in the days ahead for a region where many cities have baked in triple-digit temperatures.

Las Vegas had been cooling since Wednesday, when it tied a record with a high of 116. Slightly overcast and a mere 107 degrees at noon Saturday, the city felt cool to some desert dwellers.

"This is fine to us," said Patti Johns, 52, a tourist visiting with her husband from Phoenix. "I'll take this over winter anytime."

But in Idaho, residents of the Wood River Valley and possibly Boise were warned they could see electrical failures in the middle of the heat wave. A wildfire damaged dozens of power poles on Friday and caused one to fall on a substation and destroy a transformer, said Jeff Beaman, a spokesman for Idaho Power.

The damage could cause rotating outages and residents were asked to reduce their power usage so the utility could meet demand, Beaman said.

In Montana, it was even too hot to fish.

Yellowstone National Park and state fisheries managers asked anglers starting Saturday not to fish on some Montana rivers between noon and 6 p.m. due to drought and scorching weather. Water temperatures in some lower-elevation rivers have reached 73 degrees in recent days, conditions that can stress and even kill fish, the National Park Service said Friday.

Park officials hoped the voluntary restrictions would prevent mandatory closures later in the season.

I think the way forward is to dub today's British Grand Prix the 'Anti-Global Warming Rally'.

Yeah, the hypocrisy did strike me - as did the fact that it doesn't seem to have done much 'promoting'. I'd barely even registered its occurence on my 'stuff that's happening' list.

Live Earth!?  Of course it's alive.  You don't need a bunch of famous people slapping each other on the back telling people to be responsible.

I wonder what the back of the stadium looked like.  I bet it was a bunch of semi truck trailers and huge buses.  If celebrities are going to do something for the environment, do something!  I don't want to effen hear about how they did this great thing that made us all aware about stuff we already knew.

And this thing about Global Warming.  It seems like an easy target for unbelievers.  Why not go back to saying "Not polluting the Earth is an excellent way to foster health of humans and mother nature"

Not many people can say their pro-pollution and expect to live a long political life.

i recycle cos it's easy, they give me pink bags and pick them up weekly, i'd like to use solar power, not because of the planet but because of my wallet..... but it costs too much to install and maintain

they want to save the world, cut costs and make electric cars, solar power works, and if every home had solar panels on their roofs then we wouldn't need to pay for power fro the nat grid. but that's why they don't want you to have them......

my family use washable nappies, my gf breast feeds our 5 month old son, so he produces no waste, no real extra costs on water, we don't have a bath only a shower.

the little things do build up, you see a difference in costs on your self if we all did this then we would spend less

Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Muse were all asked to apear and all declined for precisely the reason that it's so hypocritical, bandwagon-jumping and based on nothing more than self satisfaction. And how many people in the audience really cared about the 'cause'? They might have nodded their heads and said "yes, yes - it's so bad" but, really, they were all there for the music...

I'll continue to try and slow down the consumption of finite resources and close the ozone hole, thanks.

I loved it when Chris Rock said

"Live Earth will solve Global Warming like Live Aid solved famine"

or something to that effect.

No one was taking it seriusly.

I posted what you said above in another forum.  Hope that's ok.  What you said was true and succinct and provided better evidence than I had.

Thanks.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
But thats the problem, the Ozone layer is constantly shifling and holes forming all the time, in fact above the major polluters of the world the Ozone layer is in actuality getting THICKER, wheras holes in ohter areas are getting smaller. The fact that so many intelligent people have been brainwashed itno believing in Global Warming frightens me. I havnt read any books to do with the subject, I have however read up on the facts, why is it you think that a cycle that has been going on for millenia is conveniently ignored for a "£3 billion factfinding mission" by quangos who get rich? Why is it that the US refuses to cap its emissions but wants $$$$$ to research it?

Money, thats the answer plain and simple greed, there is NO SUCH THING AS MAN MADE OR AFFECTED GLOBAL WARMING, IT IS A NATURAL CYCLE. Scientists keep carreers going just to study it, and conveniently they travel to Bermuda, the Antarctic/arctc, Sahara desert all on business class with 5 Star hotels. Do you realy think that they are going to give all that up and admit they are lying?

Im sory but thats the truth, about 5 years ago I would have been so dumbstruck by the suggestion that its a lie but it is, global warming = NATURAL, it is like your pulse it comes and goes. If the earth is getting hotter, Why is there Hail Stones and Rain in the summer? Why is it that weather patterns are repeteing the same cycle of approximatly 80 -90 years? Oh thats right our pollutants are causing the earth to get hotter. Why is it that MARS MILLIONS OF MILES AWAY HEATS UP ON EXACTLY THE SAME CYCLE AS THE EARTH??? Why is that conveiniently ignorred? TAXES! Put a tax on something saying it is to make us more environmentaly stable, you can justify anything.

If polution was such a probllem why would the oil companys of the US be allwed to provide ALL ELECTRIC power cars to people, and then take em back and crush em?

Sory if this is a

moment for you but Mr Claus has more truth to him.
