I've spent half a night trying to figure out how to further disassemble him. The crown and the black waist piece/red belt look to be what's holding him together, but I can't get either to come off. Despite what the picture (barely) shows, the neck screws have been removed. Anyone know what to do from here?

If you're disassembling him to paint him, you could probably get away with the state he's currently in- you can always use tin foil to mask off any areas you're scared of getting paint on.
Sorry I couldn't help you any more with the actual disassembling. :(

I believe, and i could be wrong, they are popped on at assembly. I would not try. I have heard or people using heat to expand that part and not the rest, but it still has to be jimmied (pryed) off..
Some g1 parts too had glued sections also to seal seams
Have you ever considered dying it?

I took mine apart and I don't think you get rid of the crown. The way I see your Picture it's as good as it's going to get. More than enough room for painting.

I'm trying to get him open for clean up and painting but also to get at his electronics for repair or replacement.
Hmm. Well, thanks guys. I might just have to settle.
(And nope, Dreadwing, never have considered dyeing him, I can barely work a paintbrush!)

Don't worry about the electronics, you'll just be disappointed.

Got it! The red belt had to be pried off first, then the black ring. Both were on tight, but I took my time, used caution, crossed my fingers and they popped off without damage. After that the parts... part.
Lot of nasty battery corrosion inside.
